Prison Officers Who Assisted Suspect Escape Denied Bail

Harare Magistrate ruled that the two prison officers who allegedly assisted a suspected serial rapist, Sam Muropa, to escape from Harare Remand Prison are not suitable candidates for bail, ZBC can reveal.

43 year old Ngonidzashe Munhuuripi and Simbarashe Machekera aged 24 are facing charges of criminal abuse of office by assisting an alleged serial rapist to escape from remand prison.

Allegations are that the two allegedly approached the prisoner and volunteered to help him escape from prison on the basis that it was going to be difficult for him to be granted bail.

The court heard that on the 1st of October, during lock up time the co-accused helped Muropa to hide in a bathroom and later took him to the reception where they sourced for Muropa’s clothes on the pretext that he had been granted bail.

It is further alleged that they briefed Muropa on the security set up of the premises and advised him on the best route to avoid other prison guards.

Munhuuripi is said to have assisted Muropa to lay concrete pillars against a precast wall which he used to escape from prison.

The court heard that Machekera hired a taxi for Muropa which came to collect him from the prison.

Muropa was, however, re-arrested on the fifth of this month and implicated the co-accused leading to their arrest. -ZBC News
