Harare-Advocate Thabani Mpofu, a prominent Harare lawyer, presented himself to police on Monday after he was raided at his home on Sunday, PindulaNews has revealed.
Advocate Nelson Chamisa, MDC-A President, confirmed the case, saying that human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa accompanied Advocate Mpofu to present himself to the police.
“Just been informed that Advocate Thabani Mpofu presented himself to the police in the company of Lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa after indications that the police were looking for him. We are yet to be informed about the reasons behind all this,” Adv. Mtetwa said.
In a Twitter post, Journalist Hopewell Chon’ono said Mpofu’s lawyers went to Morris Depot today to have a clear picture on what could have really happened.
“Advocate Thabani Mpofu’s @adv_fulcrum home was raided by 11 people yesterday, some armed. This was after they had been to his former home.
“The police refused to tell the lawyers anything in his absence. The lawyers went back to Morris Depot with him and are yet to hear what this is all about. The Investigating Officer is Detective Chief Inspector Mazhawidza,” he said.
This development follows after Alex Magaisa, one of the former advisers to the late former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, said a few days ago that there was a plot to arrest Mpofu on some “trumped-up charges”.
“I’m advised elements of the system are coming after top lawyer, Adv. Thabani Mpofu. The plan is to arrest him on some trumped-up charges,” he said.
He added that Adv. Mpofu has been a well known counsel for the MDC A.
