Government has introduced new highway Zupco buses to assist in alleviating travelling costs that have become unsustainable for most ordinary citizens.
Five buses have been allocated per route at affordable rates.
The cost of bus fares destinations are Harare-Bulawayo $30, Harare-Masvingo $25, Harare-Mutare $25 Harare-Binga $45, Harare-Mount Darwin $15.
New highway Zupco buses will be a relieve to most passengers who were forking out exorbitant rates for travelling costs to travel to threir desired destinations.
Passengers interviewed by this publication welcomed government’s initiative to introduce new highway Zupco buses but lamented that the number of buses could only cater for a small portion of passengers.
“Government’s efforts to introduced new high way buses is a noble gesture but is not viable or sustainable.
“The five buses introduced per-route will cannot accommodate everyone,” said Mellisa Dube.
Most passengers had earlier been forced to resort to private transport at negotiable fees as they could not cope up with the exorbitant travelling rates offered by other public service providers.
Fortune Ngwenya another passenger interviewed by this publication was skeptical about the government initiative citing that it was going to stir corruption and public despondency.
“The new introduced buses are going to be overwhelmed by demand and a lot of passengers are going to seek the service of these handful buses that can only cater for limited number for people.
“The limited number of the new highway buses could potentially incite public brawls amongst passengers attempting to embark in the buses as well as potential corruption as bus operators are liable to be bribed to give favours to some passengers,” he said.
