Embattled MDC Vice chairman Job Sikhala was on Wednesday shipped to Masvingo -Gutu to face treason charges following his weekend announcement that the opposition would remove President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The outspoken Zengeza West MP was arrested on Tuesday after his weekend utterances at a rally in Bikita that Mnangagwa would be overthrown before 2023, the year his term expires.
While his lawyers led by Alec Muchadehama, Jeremiah Bhamu, Tendai Biti and Harrison Nkomo were waiting for Sikhala to arrive at Harare magistrate court at 2 pm on Wednesday, they were surprised to be told that the police had taken the MP to Masvingo, the province where the alleged offence was committed.
“We have just been told that he is now heading to Masvingo. We were waiting for him here but these guys decided otherwise,” said Muchadehama.
Sikhala faces capital punishment if he is convicted of the alleged plot to overthrow an elected government. He becomes the 21st person to be charged with treason this year alone by the Mnangagwa government.
