MDC MP for Kambuzuma Willis Madzimure has demanded that the minister of State Security Owen Ncube gives the national assembly an update on investigation into the disappearance of journalist Itai Dzamara.
Raising the matter as a point of privilege, Madzimure said it is now more than five years Dzamara went missing amid suspicion that he was abducted by state security agents but no update was being given towards to search efforts that were being done to locate his whereabouts.
“It is also more than five months since the minister promised this house that he was going to give us an update. It is enshrined in our Constitution that a person has a right to life and to protection but we also have got provisions in our statutes that deal with missing people. The family has been going through terrible times and I think it is now high time that the minister comes to this House and report on the investigations. If there is need for him to declare Itai Dzamara dead, then he does that so that the family can put this issue to closure,” Madzimure said.
Dzamara was known for criticising the Robert Mugabe regime and he organised protest demanding that the former leader steps down.
The demands resulted in his disappearance with fears high that he was abducted by security agents from his neighbourhood.
Deputy speaker in the national assembly, Tsitsi Gezi ruled that she would force the state security minister to come and give an update on the matter.
“Hon. Madzimure, we will ask the Minister to come and give us an investigation report on that matter. I thank you”.
