President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed former finance minister Patrick Chinamasa as board chair of the struggling Air Zimbabwe, giving a lifeline to the former cabinet minister.

Chinamasa, the Zanu PF secretary for Finance, was deployed to the party headquarters after he lost the parliamentary election for Makoni Central last year. In a statement, chief secretary to the office of the president and cabinet, Misheck Sibanda said the appointment was with immediate effect.

The Air Zimbabwe board was disbanded last year after government placed the struggling airline under administration and was set to be merged with Zimbabwe Airways.
