Government has contracted 7000 farmers under command agriculture for the production of winter wheat.
Addressing journalists at a post cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the private sector was also subcontracting farmers.
“7000 are already contracted under command agriculture and another hectrage, the private sector is also subcontracting so the figure can increase,” she said.
Mutsvangwa said the production plan was now in place.
“Cabinet was briefed by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement on the status of preparations on the 2019 wheat production programme are now in place,” Mutsvangwa said.
She said cabinet called for farmers to double efforts towards wheat production.
“Cabinet therefore calls on our farmers to redouble efforts towards the production of wheat for the country,” she said.
The country has been facing wheat shortages because of foreign currency shortages.
