MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa says the response towards the Cyclone Idai by ordinary people was far much better compared to that of government.
In a statement, Chamisa said the people who helped to rescue and retrieve drowned bodies due to the extreme rainfall that hit eastern Zimbabwe responded better than the government which failed to warn and remove the people from danger zone in time.
Chamisa said the formation and trajectories of the Cyclone can be detected and forecast but the government did little to let the people be aware of the impending danger and remove them to safe places.
“The response of the people was better than the response of the State which came like an afterthought when cyclones are a scientific phenomenon whose formation and trajectory can be detected and forecast,
” Although we all saw the Cyclones have become regular in our part of the world. Citizens would have thought by now the State has learnt something about how to save lives and to protect the people during these deadly cyclones, “ he said.
Meanwhile, Chamisa also urged the nation to respond to any emergency and bear the oneness spirit which they showed at the recent disaster in Cimanimani.
“…I urge the nation to harness this ubuntu spirit and to use it to build capacity for responding to similar emergencies in the future, ” he said.
