Harare – A Harare Magistrate has slapped three youthful protesters with a four year jail term each after they were found guilty and convicted for taking part in violent demonstrations that saw the looting and blockage of roads from around the country last month.
Kinos Muchadumbw(21), Artwell Chaola (26) and Kudakwashe Chaola(26) were found guilty of participating in gatherings with intent to promote public violence and breaching of peace.
Prosecutor Caroline Mutimusakwa pleaded with the court to give the accused stiff penalty to set an example for whoever might consider engaging in public violence which restricts the movement of other citizens infringing their right to free movement.
Harare Magistrate Edwin Marecha sentenced them to an effective three years behind bars after suspending one year on condition that they do not commit a similar offense in the next five years.
According to state papers, on January 16, at around 1100 hours, the trio together with others who were demonstrating were seen participating in a demonstration at Mverechena Business Center. The gang was seen burning tires and barricading the roads.
The trio was later seen blocking the road with boulders which they used to extort money from motorists to allow them passage.
