Harare The officer-in-charge of Borrowdale Police Station, Simbarashe Sibanda (40) has been slapped with a four year jail term for scalding his wife over relish.
Harare Magistrate Jessy Kufa sentenced Sibanda to an effective three year jail term after one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour. He was facing charges of attempted murder.
“You are a law enforcement agent who was looked up to in society because of your rank and you were supposed to lead by example. We have members of civic societies and the government advocating for the eradication of domestic violence and you were required to do the same,” said Magistrate Kufa whilst passing sentence.
Sibanda poured hot water on his wife, a police officer as well, Stella Ruswa. The magistrate said he had committed a serious offence and used lethal means, in this case boiling water in the commission of the offence.
She also said Ruswa will likely have a conjective neck, suffer from permanent injuries and kelloids.
Prosecuting, Chipo Matambo said the incident occurred on June 8 around 17: 00 hrs when the two had a misunderstanding over purchase of meat for dinner.
Sibanda grabbed a boiling pot which was on the stove and poured the contents on Ruswa causing serious burns.
