A former athlete has become a saviour for underprivileged pupils at  Zengeza 5 primary school in Chitungwiza after  he set up a scholarship fund to the tune of $21 000.

The money will cater for the school fees of at least 200 pupils for one full year.

Through his philanthropic organisation Musengezi Foundation, Matthew Musengezi presented the cheque to the school headmaster Robert Mushaurwa in the presence of staffers and parents on Wednesday.

Musengezi is a product of the school and he recently   returned home from the United States where he was on an athletics scholarship at the University Of Tulsca.

He said he was touched by the plight of some pupils whose parents could not afford to pay school fees in this harsh economic climate.

“I grew up in a tough environment where I went to school without shoes and unpaid school fees. But through God’s grace I used my God given talent to excel and I feel it is now my turn to help others.I decided to start with my former school but my Foundation will be going around schools with the same mission. I urge other entrepreneurs to help the needy in any way they can, it’s not just about the money,” he said.

The headmaster thanked the Musengezi Foundation for its gesture and confirmed that the money had already been deposited in their school account.

“We appreciate his gesture and it shows that he had a proper upbringing. The beneficiaries must also work hard and appreciate such a good deed,” said the headmaster.

Musengezi Foundation was founded this year and it seeks to empower underprivileged youths through provision of school fees, identifying and nurturing sporting talent among other things within its mandate.
